About Sarah Edmunds

Sarah Edmunds is a singer/songwriter and psychotherapist living in suburban Washington, DC.  Sarah’s interest in music began as a young child, often singing with her father on long car rides, at home, and in the church. She still recalls Johnny Cash, Peter Paul and Mary, and Three Dog Night being in her father’s record collection. The very first records she bought with her own money were 45s. One was “Kung Fu Fighting” by Carl Douglas, and the other was “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis Presley. Sarah was also very involved with dance and theatre, participating in several high school musicals, as well as, productions at Glen Echo theatre in Cabin John, MD, and at the Hartke Theatre at Catholic University.

However, as happens with many people, Sarah grew up and life got in the way. She pursued a graduate degree in Clinical Social Work at Catholic University, eventually married, started a family (yada, yada), and became a remarkable shower crooner and car karaoke expert. Somewhere around 2019, just prior to the pandemic, Sarah began to realize that life had become pretty much an endless stream of chaos and that the promising images of the Pottery Barn Catalogue were total bullshit. Caught up in a mid-life riptide, Sarah entertained the idea of going to therapy herself – which she did – but she continued to feel that damn  nagging feeling you get when you know what you were probably born to do, but you just don’t do it because your parents and teachers tell you, “You can’t do THAT for a living!”  Therapy is a good thing, but because of her experience in mental health, Sarah was able to recognize that she was really suffering from the heartache of having neglected to cultivate room in her life for the one thing she truly loved. So, Sarah went on the hunt for a voice coach. Eventually, she landed on and began to study with Debbie Kirkland, a graduate of Duke Ellington School of the Arts and a local DC Jazz artist. She also attended an intensive vocal workshop in Costa Rica, where she met Claude Stein, who would eventually become her music producer and arranger and the fire was lit! Sarah was flying high and feeling totally reinvigorated and like she was gonna go on and do big things AND THEN THERE WAS A FUCKING PANDEMIC!

BUT, due to the magic of Zoom, Sarah also reconnected with one of her childhood friends, longer/songwriter Jenny Van West, and began taking guitar lessons – for like the 20th time – and learned enough chords to help her carry a tune. Inspired by her coaches and mentors, Sarah began writing songs as a way to stay sane during the pandemic. And thus, Preacher’s Daughter was brought to life. Sarah feels strongly that creative arts of some kind, any kind, are paramount to helping people understand and heal themselves, and actively encourages her clients to explore childhood dreams and connect with their own creative process.
